Description

This beautiful prayer necklace is created with the traditional number of 108 beads. The crystals combined with our specially chosen ebony wood give a great looking contrast. When using your necklace for prayer the wood/silver/crystal combination makes it possible for you to sense when you are at the beginning or at the end of your 108 bead prayer cycle.

History

The prayer beads are a traditional tool for reciting mantras. They have been used in many religions and by many non-religious people around the world. They have many symbols and traditions surrounding them.

This necklace has 108 beads used for prayer. In many schools of Buddhism it is believed that there are 108 feelings. According to Bhante Gunaratana (Buddhist monk) this number is reached by multiplying the senses, smell, touch, taste, hearing, sight, and the feeling each sense brings whether it is painful, pleasant or neutral, and then again by whether these are internally generated or externally occurring, and yet again by past, present and future; Finally we get 108 feelings. 6 × 3 × 2 × 3 = 108.

In Japan, at the end of the year, a bell is chimed 108 times in Buddhist temples to finish the old year and welcome the new one.

Many East Asian martial arts trace their roots back to Buddhism, specifically, to the Buddhist Shaolin Temple. Because of their ties to Buddhism, 108 has become an important symbolic number in a number of martial arts styles.

According to Marma Adi (Art of vital points) and Ayurveda (a system of medicine), there are 108 pressure points in the body, where consciousness and flesh intersect to give life to the living being.

So how do you use your prayer beads?

The necklace is held in one hand with the silver tag as a starting point. For each bead that runs through your fingers you say a prayer or a mantra after your liking. Since the beads are fingered in an automatic manner, they allow you to keep track of how many prayers have been said with a minimal amount of conscious effort, which in turn allows greater attention to be paid to the prayers themselves.

There are different traditions in how the prayer beads are being used. Some say they should be counted between the thumb and middle finger, some say you have to change direction and go back when you have reached a full 108 cycle on the necklace. There are many more interesting methods out there.

Personally we believe that the most effective way to use your prayer necklace is to make up your own mind about how you want to use it. Try out different techniques and see what works for you. In this way you fill your prayer beads with the best possible energy and power. The more energy you put into your prayer beads, the more they will vibrate with that energy and give it back to you.
